Eye Exams

Vision Exam

There are routine exams for people who have no eye disease or symptoms of disease. Your eyes will be examined for any needed correction (glasses or contact lenses) or any potential indicators of eye disease. If your eye doctor finds anything abnormal during your vision exam, further testing of a medical nature may be needed at another visit. In that case, Alberta Health Service would be billed for the medical eye exam.

Routine vision eye exams for patients aged 18 and below and 65 years of age or higher are covered by Alberta Health Services. For patients between 19-64 inquire with your private insurance of any vision benefits.

Medical Eye Exam

This is a medically necessary comprehensive examination for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the eye. This exam evaluates the reason for the symptoms and assesses any treatment or referrals needed. Some conditions evaluated with medical eye exams include cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and many other potentially sight-threatening diseases. Any medical/emergency ocular visits are covered by AHS regardless of age.

Pediatric Eye Exam

A pediatric eye exam consists of additional testing such as cycloplegic refraction (putting drops in and then checking for any refractive errors with a light instrument) that is not routinely performed in adult eye exam. Some vision issues are more likely to present in childhood than adulthood. Additionally, children with uncorrected vision conditions or eye health problems can face major barriers early in life that affect them academically, socially and athletically. But quality eye care can help children overcome the obstacles related to poor vision, allowing them to grow and thrive.

Speciality/Regular Contact Lens Fitting

A comprehensive eye exam needs to be conducted prior to a contact lens fitting/exam. Contact lenses can correct a wide range of refractive errors, including astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia (near focusing problems that occur with age). Our staff and doctors will assist in training and educating you in the care, handling and hygiene of contact lens wear. After finding a contact lens that fits properly, provides good vision, and is comfortable, the doctor will then finalize the contact lens prescription.

Custom fit scleral lenses provide dramatic improvements in visual acuity and comfort levels to those with corneal irregularities due to refractive eye surgery complications, keratoconus, astigmatism, dry eye, or other ocular conditions. A scleral lens sits on the sclera of the eye and vaults over the cornea, virtually eliminating friction and discomfort. This “dome” creates a new optical surface to replace the damaged cornea. The fitting for a speciality contact lens can take a few follow-ups to get the correct lens for your cornea. If interested please ask your eye doctor.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetic eye exams are covered by AHS for Albertans. This needs to be done at least once a year and it involves a dilated fundus exam with additional testing to rule out diabetic retinopathy. If required a referral will be sent to the retinal specialist.

Glaucoma Testing and Co-Management

If your eye doctor notes any suspicious findings relating to glaucoma at the routine eye exam, they will bring you back for further testing and follow-up examinations. These tests and followup examinations are covered by AHS. Some tests include peripheral vision testing, scanning of the optic nerve, measuring corneal thickness, checking eye pressure, assessing the aqueous drainage system and a dilated fundus exam. If required a referral will be sent to the glaucoma specialist.
